A Successful Safety Environment to Maintain at Work
This book is an important resource for anyone entering the workforce and especially those in human resource and health & safety departments. The book tends to focus on medium to large companies and has many examples of success stories that companies can relate to. Smaller organizations with limited staff that tend to wear many hats may also be able to utilize some of the ideas, checklists and templates. One key chapter for many industries is Chapter Six “Balancing Safety and Productivity”. Companies that I have been associated with, have difficulty being convinced that the cost of safety, protecting the environment and complying with legislation is essential to a profitable, long lasting company. In my experience, upper management, especially accountants, the board of directors and shareholders are the most resistant to this balanced approach. They have become more and more obsessed with profit in the short term, not the long term. Again in my experience, many trade union negotiators include better health and safety issues in their negotiations, these issues are either watered down or sidelined for better wages. As the author stresses, health and safety issues need to be part of the entire management and workforce’s culture.

‘Changing the culture’ is often new management’s mantra, yet many times results in just a few tweaks of the existing mission statement and some updated terminology. But in Oliver Greer’s ‘Workplace Safety Culture Success’, the author thoroughly defines what culture change truly means and provides the details of how to achieve it. The book focuses specifically on workplace safety, a critical priority for any enterprise. However, principles like leading by example, engaging employees to build their ownership of the culture, and linking that buy-in with high productivity, among others, are concepts that can serve as the core of any organization’s internal transformation. Whether prioritizing workplace safety itself is your goal or if you have a larger vision in mind, you want to read this book.
