Jay Shetty, social media superstar and host of the number one podcast On Purpose, distills the timeless wisdom he learned as a monk into practical steps anyone can take every day to live a less anxious, more meaningful life.
When you think like a monk, you’ll understand:
How to overcome negativityHow to stop overthinkingWhy comparison kills loveHow to use your fearWhy you can’t find happiness by looking for itHow to learn from everyone you meetWhy you are not your thoughtsHow to find your purposeWhy kindness is crucial to successAnd much more
Shetty grew up in a family where you could become one of three things—a doctor, a lawyer, or a failure. His family was convinced he had chosen option three: Instead of attending his college graduation ceremony, he headed to India to become a monk, to meditate every day for four to eight hours, and devote his life to helping others.
After three years, one of his teachers told him that he would have more impact on the world if he left the monk’s path to share his experience and wisdom with others. Heavily in debt, and with no recognizable skills on his résumé, he moved back home in North London with his parents. Shetty reconnected with old school friends—many working for some of the world’s largest corporations—who were experiencing tremendous stress, pressure, and unhappiness, and they invited Shetty to coach them on well-being, purpose, and mindfulness.
Since then, Shetty has become one of the world’s most popular influencers. In 2017, he was named in the Forbes magazine 30-under-30 for being a game-changer in the world of media. In 2018, he had the number one video on Facebook with more than 360 million views. His social media following totals more than 38 million, he has produced more than 400 viral videos that have amassed more than eight billion views, and his podcast, On Purpose, is consistently ranked the world’s number one health and wellness podcast.
In this inspiring, empowering book, Shetty draws on his time as a monk to show us how we can clear the roadblocks to our potential and power. Combining ancient wisdom and his own rich experiences in the ashram, Think Like a Monk reveals how to overcome negative thoughts and habits and access the calm and purpose that lie within all of us. He transforms abstract lessons into advice and exercises we can all apply to reduce stress, improve relationships, and give the gifts we find in ourselves to the world. Shetty proves that everyone can—and should—think like a monk.

Book of wisdom
I’m really grateful to have found this book. Jay is wise beyond his years and I wish to have the peace he seems to have in his life. His writing style is really easy to follow and captivating. Some self help books I zone out but this one is very good. I am halfway through and can’t put it down. A lot to ponder and advice to work on in our own lives. I will be re-reading this book through the years as it is important to remember these points he makes. Ridding life of negative thought patterns is definitely a challenge for us all and I find his tips very useful. This book has really helped me through a hard time in my life right now. I feel at ease letting go of the past and looking forward trying to be my best self today.

This book illustrates great mindfulness approaches to life, and how to love and appreciate yourself, along with practices for improving relationships with those around you, as Jay learned during his time as a monk. It’s a good read and offers valuable insights into life.

An interesting self help book
As a Christian it was interesting to read about the life of a Monk. I found his story intriguing, however, it would see now that he has used this to expand his career coming out of the monastery and into the world of guest speaking and podcasts. I would say there are some good basic life lessons to follow but you will get the jest without completing the whole book.

True manual of life
This book is one of the best books for self improvement. I don’t really like reading but finding this gem has definitely sparked my interest in books. I recently started my journey of self improvement and found that the teachings in this book is extremely useful for our everyday life. I struggle with anxiety and deal with a ton of scars from childhood and this has definitely helped me in ways that I never thought a book can do. One of the best things that I learned from this book is how to manage our issues by getting to the root of the problem. Oftentimes we dwell on our personal struggles but fail to realize the deeper cause of our problems. This is a true manual of life and I’m glad that Jay is teaching us how to be compassionate human beings not only to others but most especially to ourselves.

I think everyone can gain something from this gem!
Jay is wise beyond his years. And such a kind soul the world needs more of him.I’ve been following Jay’s YouTube videos for years and he has really helped my brother and I through tough times. My whole family are huge fans. This was a book we have all been waiting for THANK YOU JAY! Christmas presents this year is a no-brainer :)Whats great about the book is I’ve read it through twice but I have 2 copies lying around the house and my mum will pick it up and read random pages from it all the time and its crazy how relevant those totally random pages will be to the day we are having.Jay’s free meditations and meditation journal are our daily 15 mins of calm and relaxation. This is definitely a must read for 2020! But not just 2020 for everyone’s bookshelf IMO.For those who say or compare it to other selfhelp books. At the end of the day all self help books end up telling you the same thing but in different ways you have to find what resonates with you. So to the negative reviewers out there.. u clearly haven’t found one that resonates with you I truly hope you do. Its a special experience 🙂
