It’s the reason why spending time on Facebook makes us feel sad and lonely. Why expensive name-brand medicines provide better pain relief than the generic stuff, even if they share the same ingredients. And why a hospital room with a good view speeds up recovery from surgery.
The truth is, the way we think about ourselves and the world around us dramatically impacts our happiness, health, how fast or slow we age, and even how long we live. In fact, people with a positive mindset about aging live on average 7.5 years longer than those without.
That might sound alarming to those of us who struggle to see the bright side, but the good news is we can make surprisingly simple changes or small shifts to how we think, feel, and act that will really pay off.
In The Positive Shift: Mastering Mindset to Improve Happiness, Health, and Longevity, Dr. Catherine Sanderson breaks down the science of thought and shows how our mindset—or thought pattern—exerts a substantial influence on our psychological and physical health. Most important, this book demonstrates how, no matter what our natural tendency, with practice we can make minor tweaks in our mindset that will improve the quality—and longevity—of our life.
Combining cutting-edge research from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and medicine, as well as vivid real-world examples of the power of mindset, The Positive Shift gives readers practical and easy strategies for changing maladaptive thought patterns and behaviors so they can live longer, happier lives. These behaviors include:
Appreciating nature, with actions as simple as eating lunch outside
Giving to others, like volunteering
Spending money on experiences, not possessions
Living your best life is truly mind over matter. Believe in yourself and rethink your way to a happier reality.

Amazing and encouraging!
I listened to this as an audiobook, ready by author. Yes, it’s mostly a collection of studies but so fascinating and helpful! The power of the mind is just amazing. I’m 44 and want to age well with a positive outlook. The chapter on ageing was gold. I plan on listening to this book every year as a refresher along with Keep Sharp, How not to Die, Atomic Habits, and Why We Sleep. All 5/5 books.

This is not the typical book I would have chosen to read, but after seeing Prof. Sanderson presenting on this topic I got quite interested, and I ordered the book. It is well written, in a clear and pleasant to read style. The power of positive thinking is treated from a multitude of angles, always with references to studies. This certainly contributes to make the points clear and credible. Also, there are plenty of practical examples and situations I could relate to. I found this read interesting, pleasant, and helpful. As soon as I finished reading the book, I passed it to my wife, and I ordered a copy to be delivered to my son and another copy to be delivered to my daughter. I hope they will read it and enjoy it as much as I did.

The basic premise is we can be happier, and live a longer and less stressful life, by the way we think about ourselves and the world around us, our mindset, by using easily implemented, research-based strategies. The author emphasizes that this obviously isn’t a one size fits all prescription. Each of us has to take what is to be learned here and apply it in ways we feel will be most meaningful to us. “The Positive Shift” is a practical and easily readable guide to happiness, better health and living longer.

Normally not the type of book I would read but I purchased as a result of a very compelling presentation Prof. Sanderson made at a financial conference I attended in January. Simply put this is one of the best life improvement books I have ever read. If you are looking for actionable ways to improve your happiness or better understand what makes people happy vs unhappy this book is a must read. The book is an easy read and completely based on detailed scientific research.

I liked this one. There were a lot of practical suggestions that you can implement right away. As a veteran teacher, I was impressed that there were some new, research-backed ideas that have really helped me with self-care. It’s an easy, enjoyable read.

The Positive Shift is an easy read, full of interesting anecdotes and research studies translated into lay language. I have read a lot of positive psychology books, so I was pleasantly surprised to find learn new information, particularly about the impact of mindset on aging. In addition to presenting research, Sanderson offers a number of concrete, easy-to-implement suggestions on how to improve mindset.
