It isn’t easy to find good books explaining what impact investing is. I’ve come across two books that differentiate from the rest by providing history, clear definitions, and connections with other similar concepts. One of them is “Impact: Reshaping Capitalism to Drive Real Change”, by Sir Ronald Cohen, and this one, “The Little Book of Impact Investing”, by Priya Parrish. Priya does a lovely job narrating the past, present, and future of impact investing. Clarifies the differences and similarities among ESG (Environmental, Social, and Government), SRI (Socially Responsible Investing), and impact investing. Shares frameworks to enable quick identification of impact models and to determine what should be measured. Also, it explores, with examples the opportunity set for impact investing. She makes the reading more enjoyable by interlacing personal stories and experiences.

This is an exceptional book and introduction to the world of impact investing by one of the foremost experts in the field, Priya Parrish. Tracing both the relevant history of the field as well as important current applications and notable case studies, the book manages to be both accessible to those early in exploring impact investing as well as engaging for experienced practitioners. Priya’s approach is refreshingly candid and direct — she’s unafraid to share her own journey, address common myths, and tackle some of the challenging aspects of the field. It’s rare to find a finance book that’s engaging while still sharp and practical. Her anecdotes add personality and depth, making the whole field feel relatable and inspiring. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to align their investments with their values, whether they’re just starting out or are seasoned professionals.

This is an incredibly informative book and at the same time very approachable. I can’t think of another single source of information on the impact investing sector that does as good a job at laying out what impact investing is, what it isn’t and how to do it. Even though I work in the sector, I found the book inspiring and I learned a lot. I think anyone who reads it will find the same!

As a newcomer to impact investing and the world of PE/VC, this book offers a clear guide and foundation to the financial and social benefits of impact investing. I appreciate that it includes very little to no jargon, making it digestible, easy to follow, and even captivating (which is a word I might not normally use to describe a book about financial strategies). This book teaches us how investing our dollars in a way that creates both financial and positive social returns is not only possible, but actually makes the most sense. We learn that there is hope in a world run by capitalism that we can use our dollars to benefit ourselves as well as society as a whole.

This exciting book will transform how you think about investing by inspiring you to add a whole new axis to consider: the axis of IMPACT. As the author reminds us in Chapter Six, “All investors are impact investors – positively or negatively. This is because all investments have an impact beyond a financial gain or loss for the investor.”With that mindset unlocked, this book delivers practical real life examples and the theory behind them to accomplish goals big and small for impact in your community and the world at large. Highly recommended for anyone curious about how to take that first step toward investing for powerful returns – both financial and social.
