2022 Update. Based on the author’s 50 years of Montessori work in 30 countries: teaching, consulting with schools and governments, speaking, and as an oral examiner for Montessori teacher training courses. Mindfulness is an ancient practice in the East, a great need for health and happiness in the West, and an everyday practice in authentic Montessori schools, in the homes of Montessori savvy parents, and under the tutelage of exceptional teachers of all kinds. The author tells her own story of 50+ years of meditation and working in the Montessori field, and gives detailed suggestions for both parents and teachers to aid the development of this skill in themselves and in the children they live with. A chapter “Mindfulness Practices in Education: Montessori’s Approach” by Dr. Angeline Lillard, is included in this book.

It is easy to find a Montessori book out there, but this focus on mindfulness, on how the child can experience “flow” and have a meditative experience through Montessori education is not to be missed. Read the book—you won’t regret it!

This is a wonderful book about living in the present and being mindful.I had the pleasure of already listening to the author at the Montessori congress in Prague in summer 2017.The book gives me the time to hear her thoughts again and let them sink in.As a Montessori teacher it is wonderful to see how this method gives children the possibility to thrive without stress, get to know oneself and live mindfully. It confirms that we are on the right path.I can highly recommend this book to Montessorians, who seek a mindful path in daily life where we easily forget what it is all about. But I also recommend this book to people who are seeking a mindful life – it gives ideas how we can lead this kind of life.Thank you Susan Mayclin Stephenson!

I was traveling as I was reading this book. Susan’s illustrative stories of how Maria Montessori’s observations (and Susan’s own observations) about how children learn and develop illuminated my experiences of children interacting with parents and each other as I visited family and friends. I need to order some more copies to pass along. There is so much suffering that will be no longer necessary as more and more children and adults learn to calm down, observe, respect and trust the sovereignty of each other and ourselves, as we give ourselves the time and just-in-time experiences to develop into ourselves.
