A Mind-Body Approach to Healing
If you have received a cancer diagnosis, you know that the hundreds of questions and concerns you have about what’s to come can be as stressful as the cancer treatment itself. But research shows that if you mentally prepare yourself to handle cancer treatment by getting stress and anxiety under control, you can improve your quality of life and become an active participant in your own recovery.
Created by leading psychologists specializing in oncology, the Mindfulness-Based Cancer Recovery program is based on mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR), a therapeutic combination of mindfulness meditation and gentle yoga now offered to cancer survivors and their loved ones in hundreds of medical centers, hospitals, and clinics worldwide. Let this book be your guide as you let go of fear and focus on getting well.
With this eight-week program, you’ll learn to: • Use proven MBSR skills during your treatment and recovery
• Boost your immune function through meditation and healing yoga
• Calm feelings of fear, uncertainty, and lack of control
• Mindfully manage difficult symptoms and side effects
• Discover your own capacity for healing and thriving after adversity

Impressive book
I originally came across the book during an assignment, and I am very impressed by the authors dedication to researching and supporting people with cancer over a long period of time. It is clear that they are a leading expert in the field and I believe their mindfulness approach is beneficial for those dealing with various challenges. Bought for my mom who was diagnosed with breast cancer earlier this year. Thank you to the author for this great piece

Very worthwhile
Excellent. Easy to read. I would recommend this to anyone on a cancer recovery journey. Although I have not used all parts of the program, what I have incorporated into my live has made it easier to sleep and to deal with emotions.

A recommended read!
Individuals diagnosed with cancer and their support persons are often overwhelmed with a massive amount of medical information and a hectic schedule of appointments with a multitude of health professionals. It is common for people to describe the period after their cancer diagnosis as a blur, filled with hospital visits, medications and treatment side-effects, not to mention the feelings of fear, worry and sadness, among others. Drs. Carlson and Speca have created a thoughtful and compassionate guide designed to address the specific needs of individuals living with, or affected by, a cancer diagnosis. This book describes a program based on years of research and clinical experience that you can use to assist you at any stage of your cancer journey. These authors have succeeded in describing mindfulness-based cancer recovery in a manual that is easy to digest by providing simple explanations and illustrative cases, as well as meditation scripts for readers to use while practicing the skill of mindfulness. It is a fantastic resource for patients who are not willing to miss out on a single day of their life just because they have cancer and clinicians who want to help their patients manage unpleasant emotional and physical side effects. As a person who works with individuals diagnosed with cancer, this is a book I will be recommending to everyone.

I recently read this book, two weeks after I finished my surgery and chemo treatments for stage four Uterine cancer. Even though my CT scans are now clear, I was having trouble with anxiety about the future. I’ve practiced mindfulness meditation before, but this book helped me connect the practice with the most serious and terrifying time in my life. I read it on Kindle and have since ordered a print copy so I can mark pages and flip back to certain parts I want to re-read. It’s been the single best resource I’ve found during this trying time and I will be recommending it to friends whether the trials they’re facing are health related or otherwise. I feel calm now and while I know I’ll still have moments of panic, at least now I have some specific tools for dealing with them.

Mindfulness has been the most important tool that I have found to deal with my diagnosis of breast cancer. The stress of learning to live with cancer is a corner stone of finding peace with your diagnosis, and being able to refocus on making the most out of life. Each of us is only alive in this very moment that we are breathing and with each heart beat. Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Mindfulness really has helped me to reclaim my life and this book can show you how to do this one lesson at a time.Advice – do it one lesson at at time and master one technique at a time. Don’t rush on to the next lesson, but learn all you need to from each lesson in turn.If this book has any fault it is that there isn’t a CD to accompany it, as actually doing Mindfulness meditation is the best way to learn it, and it is not something to be rushed.

I bought this for a group class, and it was so very, very helpful.

Really helpful and pragmatic. Not a catharsis for the author. This book gives both for and against views on what you can choose to do to help yourself. So many books make you feel that if you don’t follow what they are saying then you are more or less doomed. Nothing like that threatening feeling with this book. Best book on recovering from cancer that I have found. Others just depressed me or made me anxious.
