I found this book to be easy to read and very informative. I am new to this way of eating and was somewhat overwhelmed as to how to introduce it into my life. Nathalie Seaton provides good, clear and realistic advice. The book also allows access to a number of books which were a much appreciated bonus.

People come in all shapes & sizes and have their own history with food. The one constant for every person is that they have to eat. The bigger question is WHY a person eats the way that they do. This book tells us there is a way to consume food in a healthy way (with no guilt or shame), and enjoy it, too!Mindfulness increases your awareness of the moment & enhances your appreciation of your current state. Mindful eating is not a diet plan, but a lifestyle. You can enjoy all food to varying degrees. You have a choice of what to eat & the control to focus on increasing your awareness. You accept responsibility for your own food choices. You are the only one that can control your health and your life. Small changes can have a big effect. Understanding WHY you eat is the first step to dealing with any eating problems. An emotional link to food is something many people struggle with. Food is all around us.There are 3 reasons people eat:1) The physical need to eat2) The desire to want to consume food3) The belief that you should eatMindful eating will help you increase your awareness of food & teach you to savor every bite. It allows you to exercise control when choosing which foods to eat. Mindful eating does not restrict foods. Rather, it encourages healthy eating habits.Recognize the cues of fullness and focus on remaining in the moment. Think about why you eat what you eat, what you eat, how you eat, how much you eat, and where you eat. This book is full of practical tips on mindful eating:1) Pause between bites2) Become aware of the flavor(s)3) Become aware of the texture(s)4) Take deep breaths5) Put away digital devices6) Take smaller bites7) Chew your food thoroughly8) Eat slowly9) Check food labels to make sensible choices10) It is okay to stop eating when you are full11) Eat a variety of foods12) Choose plant-based proteins instead of animal-based proteins13) Make healthy snacks easy to get14) Avoid purchasing extra food15) Limit the amount of processed, refined foods in your homeYou can eat whatever you want, wherever you want as long as you REMAIN MINDFUL of the experience and respond to your physical cues. Listen to what your body needs and react accordingly.Mindfulness takes the focus away from weight loss & directs your attention to wellbeing, at both the physical and psychological level. Listen to the cues from your body and stop eating when you start to become full.Stay focused and celebrate small victories. Mindful eating fosters an appreciation for food, rather than restricting your diet. I highly recommend this book!

There are a lot of great points about how we might go right or wrong with eating. How being more mindful and allowing the eating experience to be one of spiritual connection and gratefulness; perhaps our ancestors once experienced a meal when food wasn’t so abundant. The book is written with many good bullet point paragraphs, but not all of the information is agreeable, though the message as a whole is.

Mindful Eating is an excellent resource that teaches you everything you need to know to reach your goal of conquering mindless eating and overcoming the suffering of being out of control. It’s all about mastery. I especially loved the tools of meditation and journaling as I’ve found these to be the perfect tools to get out of my emotions and break whatever destructive cycle, I’m encountering, from mindless eating to negative overthinking. It helps when we’re exploring our feelings about and our relationships towards food. Additionally, the author offers many powerful journaling prompts to help you expose the depths of your food issues.I love that Nathalie makes it clear that Mindful Eating is not connected with the fad dieting craze. She also encourages the power of making small changes. She says, “It is much better to start with small changes and build up to a life of healthy habits.” I totally agree. Thanks to Nathalie for sharing her experience and knowledge in this area with the world. I would have no problem recommending Mindful Eating to all my clients, family & friends.
