The Lodge Cast Iron 5-Quart Dutch Oven is a multi-functional cookware that works wonders with slow-cooking recipes and all your favorite foods. The Dutch Oven holds a heap of chili, chicken and rice, or fruit cobbler. This model features a flat-bottom and sits on the stovetop burner or coven, with a domed lid that sends moisture back into the pot. Loop handles aid in carrying with oven mitts. Cast-iron retains heat well so you can sear meat at higher temperatures and will keep your delicious meals warm for a long time. Whether used in a kitchen or camp, theses virtually indestructible cookware should last for generations. Made of cast iron, this Dutch oven evenly distributes heat from the bottom through the sidewalls. Sporting a stylish black color, the cast iron Dutch oven looks good in most kitchens and it doubles up as an excellent source of nutritional iron. This pre-seasoned Dutch oven is ready-to-use right out of the box. While the cookware comes pre-seasoned to prevent food from sticking, it works best when sprayed or lightly coated with vegetable oil before use. The Lodge seasoning procedure is a multiple-step process in which the seasoning oil is applied via an electrostatic spray system that coats the cookware, then it’s baked in commercial ovens at very high temperatures. This allows the oil to penetrate deeply into the pores of the iron. This seasoning process achieves a seasoned finish that would take many months of home use to achieve. Sometimes during this process, the seasoning oil can collect and create a bubble or slight drip at the bottom of the pan as it’s hanging through the production process. And that in turn can turn brown as it’s processed through the seasoning ovens. This brown spot is not rust but in fact, carbonized seasoning and will darken with use. The factory seasoning process makes Lodge cast iron products ready to use right out of the box, and the product over time “Just keeps getting better”. After cooking, clean with a stiff nylon brush and hot water. Using soap is not recommended, and harsh detergents should never be used. Towel dry immediately and apply a light coating of oil to utensil while it is still warm. Cast Iron, like your grandmother used, still ranks as one of the best cooking utensils ever made. It gives you a nearly non-stick surface, without the possible harmful fumes generated by preheating chemically treated nonstick cookware. The American-based company, Lodge, has been fine-tuning its construction of rugged, cast-iron cookware for more than a century. Measures 12.563”L x 10.375”W x 4.563”H (without lid) and 12.563”L x 10.438”W x 6”H (with lid).

    Good value !
So happy with my Lodge cast iron pots. I use them for my sourdough baking and they turn out beautifully. I use my 7″ and 9″ banneton baskets for this size pot. They are also fantastic for browning meat. No issues yet, but they are heavy!

    Lasting years – bought 2017
I love this pot so much. I’ve had it just shy of 7 years and use it all the time. I never use soap on it and dry it on the stovetop then give it a quick spray with avocado oil. I’ve used it on electric coil burners, glass top, in the oven and on top of a wood stove. It’s the perfect pot.I ended up doing this review now because I’m in the market for a 7 or 9 quart to add to my collection and this popped up in my search.

Quality product at a reasonable price
I bought the 5qt dutch oven mainly for baking sourdough bread and it works perfectly for 1kg loaves. The dutch oven was shipped quickly and arrive well before the estimated delivery date. It was not shipped in an outer box – just the retail product box – but Canada Post delivered it in good condition. The pot itself looks very well made and pre-seasoned. There was no smell or residue due to the pre-seasoning and the pot was ready for use after a simple rinse and complete drying. The lid fits well and hold the moisture in (it has unique dimples on the inside of the lid to catch moisture) which is important for baking bread.

    A MUST HAVE
got it for my mother and she loves it! we first got the 9 quart lodge for the big stuff and this seems to be the rite size for making chicken curries, and anything that you fancy! i did notice a bubble on the handles but its no big deal! its probably because of the pre seasoning, there were no flakes inside the dutch oven and it seems pretty good!PROS1, its good for the money2, good taste3, awesome lidCons1, expensive compared to Amazon.com2, relatively heavy3, flaking on the handle ( it is expected because of the pre-seasoing and hey its dutch oven not a car , so my guess is that they just probably drench the oven in oil

    Top quality Dutch Oven
The quality on this Dutch Over is outstanding. This thing will be an heirloom that will outlast me and still look perfect I suspect.

    Good solid pot
Great dutch oven and pot. It’s well constructed and has a good solid weight to it. It will get a lot of use over time. For those new to cast iron, it has no protection from rust, you need to protect it after each use with a layer of oil and heat applied to cure the oil. This requires a small amount of work but the up side is it has great heat distribution and is virtually indestructible, I don’t think you could scratch it if you tried really hard, you could leave it on high heat for hours empty and get nothing but some smoke. If you threw it off a building it would likely just break the cement down below.I use cast iron a lot for cooking and this is the best quality one I have.

    My daughter loves it…..
As far as versatility, value for money, and flavour are concerned, I can’t tell you a thing. But, this was purchased as a gift for my daughter and I can tell you: She loves it! This gal is a great cook and this cast iron pot has become one of her go-to utensils. I do know that she has since purchased a couple other Lodge products, so that may say it all.

Defect with visible crack on the pot
Our 4th Lodge but the first one we bought at Amazon. This one came with a visible crack on the pot and imperfections on the cover. You can see it in the camera photos inside and on the outer layer of the pot. Looks like it was pre-seasoned with already a crack and went pass any QA at the factory. We tried to return / exchange but Amazon return choices didn’t allow for an exchange of the same item. The only choice was to return completely, and buy separate again. However, the new online price of this same Lodge 5 Qt dutch oven went up double on-line since we purchased it a week ago; so returning this and buying new would mean paying twice. This appears that this particular item was marketed as “brand new that is on sale” but did not advertise it being defective. We also cannot find a way to reach the seller to arrange an exchange before we release this public review. We like the Lodge brand and we know they make amazing products so one can imagine the frustration seeing what we got here. We know their pans will last 100 years, but we are very disappointed on this transaction. Based on these, we cannot recommend buying this brand at / from Amazon.

Cast iron is the best cookware to use according to specialists due to the fact that it is safe and adds iron to the food (fact). Lodge is one of the best brands for Cast iron cookware. Needs some care.

This is a useful size for a standard load of no-knead bread and roasting one chicken. And it’s Lodge, which means quality. You do have to keep it seasoned, but given the cancer caused by non-stick pots and pans, a little trouble is worth it
