excellent overview to understanding and embracoing an ADHD diagnosis
I was recently diagnosed with ADHD and I purchased this book to try to get a better understanding of ADHD and its impact on daily life and strategies o help manage ADHD. This book started with a very good summary of ADHD and its symptoms. I liked the quotes that were provided throughout the book as they helped set the stage for the information in the following chapter. I appreciated the recognition that ADHD is a lifelong condition that requires ongoing management. This author provided a good explanation that the hyperactivity component of this order does not always manifest in physical activity, but often can be mental, where the mind wanders, is easily distracted, and prone to daydreaming. I appreciate that the author touched upon treatment methods equally and sometimes more important and effective than medication. Stigmatization around ADHD and misconceptions of this disorder often lead to feelings of inadequacy and low self-worth. I liked that the author directly relates ADHD to communication problems and emotional dysregulation, which can have a significant impact on relationships. I appreciated the tips provided to help with time management, which can have serious impacts on professional success as we experience missed deadlines and missed appointments. I liked that the author encourages using humor to help deal with some of the mishaps that can occur when you have ADHD. It is a good reminder that we need to be kind to ourselves and learn from mistakes rather than dwell on the negative. The author highlights the positive aspects of ADHD, including creativity, problem-solving, and being able to make decisions quickly as attributes of this condition. The author expressed the importance of building routines and gave some good tips to help in establishing good routines. I also like the section on setting and following through with goals. I found it valuable to take time and reflect on the strengths and weaknesses that this condition brings and the suggestions as to how that information can be used for personal success. The stories that were used were often a reflection of my own experience. I found the section of CBT to be very informative and practical. I found the description and depiction of the Eisenhower Box Method of prioritization to be one of the best that I have seen.I liked the approach that you should take time to explore your current life patterns and then determine how to adapt the ADHD strategies to fit your life, rather than trying to change yourself to fit the tools. I found this an excellent suggestion that would help lead to greater success. I also thought that the concept of providing flexibility within a structure is very realistic as we are not always able to control what comes at us. I tend to be someone who prefers action over contemplation, so I frequently struggle with advice that recommends mindfulness and self-reflection. In this book, I appreciated the step-by-step guidance in mindfulness exercises, so I have committed to follow through for at least one week to see if I found an impact. Positive self-talk is also good advice. I found that the tips on decluttering were practical and achievable. The insight into habit formation was valuable and helped me understand the process, so it may help practically in establishing new habits. Using a rewards system that is meaningful would also greatly assist in establishing new habits and routines.Procrastination is something that I am always dealing with. I liked the 2-minute rule that identifies tasks that can be done in 2 minutes or less. Once identified these tasks can be performed immediately so you will be less distracted when you move on to the larger projects. Other good advice was to promise to do a dreaded activity for only 5 minutes – once you have started, you find it is not as bad as you had thought, so it is easier to carry on. Advice to practice self-kindness, self-compassion, and positive self-talk are also welcomed in a world where we tend more towards self doubt and condemnation. I frequently find myself in the perfectionist trap, where I procrastinate beginning activities because I am concerned about being able to perform them perfectly. I liked the advice given by this author, to begin with a rough draft and then work on perfecting it once you have a start. I also found the section on impulse control valuable. It provided some strategies to help manage those impulse buys that too frequently burst my budget efforts.I tend to be socially awkward and, as a result, experience social anxiety. I liked some of the tips offered to help me move past this, and I will be implementing some of them over the holiday season! In addition, it was good advice to begin establishing social networks to help provide support. I also liked the information about maintaining accountability, as one of my greatest fears is that I will not follow through with the activities suggested, even those that have shown to have a positive impact.Overall I found the information provided in this book to be informative and practical. I thought the activities were relevant and supported the themes suggested by the author. I liked how the author used quotes at the beginning of each chapter. I found this to be an excellent way to set the tone for the chapter and offered support and guidance. After reading this book I realized that I am not alone in this battle and that there are many resources available to help guide and support me during this transition as I move to understanding, accepting and embracing my ADHD diagnosis.
