As good a cast iron pan as I’ve seen for the price
It’s well packaged considering it weighs 1930 gm / 4.25 pounds. In a plastic bag in a cardboard box inside the shipping box. I doubt anything could damage this but still, care is taken in the use of shipping containers.It has one chipped edge on the pouring spout (of which there are two -one on each side of pan) which is kind of sad to see, seeing as the rest of it seems perfect. See pic of chip on lip. Maybe there was a flaw in the sand casting mould but it will not affect how you use this. It may cause a bit of food to stick there when done but IMO it is more cosmetic than functional damage. The overall surface seems a bit rougher than what I think it should be but with the seasoning that will come from normal usage, this should not pose a problem.It does come pre-seasoned but after washing it first, I’ll still re-reason (I have other cast iron pans and dutch ovens so I have a bit of experience with them). This is the first NEW c.i. pan I’ve used (all my others are 50+ yr old) and the surface (well, the whole pan) has a “pebbly” texture and it does look different from my oldies. Not necessarily bad, just different.The price of this is certainly much less that what you would pay for one of the more widely-known brands but having this in my hands right now, I believe it will do as good as job as the more expensive pans.It is NOT enamel coated like some brands so be aware of that.If you are new to cast iron, they also include a small booklet detailing care and upkeep so you will find that helpful.Most things can be cooked in this pan and I always add a bit of oil to keep things non-stick. It is not like teflon coated pans BUT that is a good thing in my opinion. None of those PTFT (teflon) particles to flake off. If anything ever does flake off here, it’s just the seasoning that was previously applied so no concerns.You don’t want to use acid-based sauces (ie tomato) in this as it will remove the seasoning and will need to be done again. Find steps online how to do that if re-seasoning is required. Sticking food will tell you it needs re-seasoning.Really look forward to using this pan and I think you should too if you decide that cast iron is the way to go. thing you can do is toast tortillas (pic)4* till I actually get to use this and then I will update this review accordingly.

Need a learning curve with cast iron
If you are like me, not very experienced with cast iron, then you might need to go through a learning curve with using cast iron.The first thing I did was to get it through a dishwasher, which was probably the thing you should never ever do. It turns out that cast iron products need a ritual of “seasoning” and that you should never wash them. After washing it did bleed a minimal amount of rust, possibly not as much thanks to its pre-seasoned status, However, the rust appeared only at the bottom of the skillet, possibly due to some water remaining there after the wash. Note that I don’t recall any info on or inside package, so I noticed that it was pre-seasoned only after getting back to the product page.Make sure you learn more about “seasoning” and taking care of a cast iron skillet. It is claimed that you just have to wipe it, but the cooking surface inside is rough and it does not seem that simply wiping will do. I tried to do a second round of seasoning and will see if that will help. Aside from maintenance, I also need to go through a learning curve in using it as its heating characteristics are quite different from other skillets I have used, but we will see how that goes too.I don’t have the experience to compare it with other cast iron equipment, but I am quite happy with this. On the negative side, it is heavy, has a smaller area, and not as deep as other skillets I have. But on the plus side, it seems to distribute heat well and seems to retain its heat. The round shape and the pouring spouts on two sides are nice, but I had a difficult time fitting a lid on it, and I suppose the spouts are likely to let splatter even if you find the right lid.Overall, I am happy with it and I could recommend, provided that you are fine with the 10″ size and the shallow depth. The price of $30 CAD seems good for cast iron. But make sure you know about how to use and take care of cast iron skillets.

Kind of hard to to mess up cast iron!
The rounded edges (of the inside of the pan) is what I like most about this pan. It was my first cast iron, so I figured I’d intentionally put it through the ringer of newbie mistakes. I decided to give it a good scrub with soap to start either way and the grey-ish factory season held up and didn’t come off at all. Next I gave it 3 rounds of seasoning in the oven. Then I went and cooked some bacon on it and gave it a wash with soap afterwards to see what happens. The 3 seasonings came off in the spots that had bacon stuck to it exposing the grey factory seasoning. Then I reseasoned once and then cooked veggies with Worcestershire sauce. The sauce contains vinegar and I wanted to see what happens, well it stripped off all the seasoning down to the bare cast iron, visible after just a rinse with no scrubbing. So now I know those tips it came with weren’t exaggerating so I embarked on a week of proper usage and I gotta say it is quickly becoming a regular cookware item in my house. It makes the best bacon I’ve ever had being both soft and crunchy at the same time, and clean up is very easy. Usually just a simple rinse with a scrubdaddy is all it needs, and maybe boil some water in it first if anything gets stuck on. I am now convinced it is necessary to have at least one cast iron pan in your kitchen, and this is a fine place to start.
