I’m Not Sold Yet
It’s wonderfully light, but I’m not 100% sold yet. I bought the smallest 7″ pan to see if I liked it enough to buy the 10.25″. Definitely think this is the most expensive cast iron skillet I’ve ever bought, especially for the size. Not sure if it’s worth it for the price tag.The skillet walls are considerably thinner than my standard pans, which is one reason it’s lighter. (Although my antiques are pretty light compared to modern made). This will affect how fast the pan heats, cools and how much heat it’ll retain. This isn’t a major issue for me, since it’ll be useful mostly for eggs and small single meals.The seasoning…..well it’s beautifully black, but has imperfections on the sides which you can see in the photos. If I was in the store that skillet would’ve been left on the shelf and another one would’ve been picked. For the price I expect better. One of the selling features is that its triple seasoned: I’d rather have done the seasoning myself and get better results. I tried cooking an egg with their seasoning and lard with very poor results. (I know high Hope’s for a brand new cast iron) The fried dough turned out wonderfully. Currently in the process of baking on more seasoning.I’ve never owned a Lodge before so I cannot compare the surface to their other styles. It is considerably rougher than my antiques, but not super rough where it feels pitted or tears a paper towel leaving behind pieces. Will I sand it down…..time will tell.If you’re looking for a lighter, semi smooth modern made cast iron skillet, because you can’t get your hands on an antique, then this is a great choice. Unfortunely I’m still not sold on the price tag nor the quality for the price. I could buy cheaper, sand it down to have the surface I want and re-season and suffer with a heavier pan. I feel like there could be a trip to walmart in the near future to buy a cheapo and comparisons made. I’m a fan of my older antique cast irons. They’re light and smooth. If you’re use to older cast irons this skillet will not compare. My opinion may changed after I’ve used it for couple months and I could be back to buy their bigger 10.25″ skillet.
