Journey with a 23-year professional trader on his rollercoaster ride of a career as he reveals the rules that give the pros an edge and the secrets they don’t want you to know.
“David Hale offers an insightful, humorous, and sometimes painful look into the world of day trading from the perspective of a trader with over 20 years of experience…I highly recommend this book as a must-have for your trading library”
— STEVE BURNS, legendary trading educator, author of 17 trading books including New Trader Rich Trader
” An outstanding book…Whether you’re a novice trader, a seasoned trader or simply fascinated by trading and market, this book will undoubtedly leave you with a deeper understanding of the day trading world”
— STEVE GOLDSTEIN, Host of The AlphaMind Podcast, author of Mastering the Mental Game of Trading
Possessing the key to a magical and highly secretive trading method, David Hale was only in his mid-twenties, but already living the luxurious lifestyle that legions of traders on Twitter and Instagram promise. And then the market, and life, took a turn, as he found out firsthand how brutal trading can be–he was penniless, suddenly wifeless and sleeping on his fathers’ sofa in an apartment, in of places, Poland.
Part behind-the-scenes memoir and part trading masterclass, Cash Rules follows the changing fortunes of a professional day trading veteran as he battles intense markets and navigates the highly secretive world of proprietary (prop) trading. This book not only shines the light on the firms and traders that inhabit this lucrative world, but also reveals the methods and approaches that these firms, and their 8-figure earning traders, keep guarded from the masses. These are the methods that allow top traders to gorge on fat profits while the masses are fed generic technical methods from their “gurus” on Twitter and YouTube.
While these rules and methods can lead to success in any form of trading, Cash Rules makes no attempt to sugar-coat the harsh realities of this brutal business; David’s tale will make that apparent. Don’t worry, there are still stories of flip-flop-wearing 20-year-olds making millions, and we visit some interesting and unusual places to unveil these secret methods and rules: Texas schoolyard baseball card exchanges, the world’s highest-action casinos in Macau and Vegas, British gambling arcades, the HQ of a sketchy Polish crypto firm, and the offices of David’s self-owned proprietary trading firm.
Get ready for a wild ride while learning the ultimate rules to become a successful trader–and remember, in this business successful means rich, because in trading…Cash Rules!

A Captivating Peek into the Life of a Day Trader!
David Hale’s first book is an absolute gem that stands out in the trading genre. This captivating memoir takes you on an exciting journey through his life as a professional day trader, filled with personal challenges that make his story truly remarkable. He doesn’t hold back, sharing both his successes and, more importantly, his failures. With humility, David opens up about his experiences, allowing you to connect with him on a deeper level. But what sets this book apart is his wise advice. He shows you the importance of spotting market glitches for long-term success.Whether you’re a newbie or an experienced trader, “Cash Rules” is a must-read. It offers invaluable guidance for traders at any stage. This book is a valuable addition to your trading library. Even if you’re not a trader, it provides a unique glimpse into the thrilling world of day trading.

Disclosure: I found David and his book via Twitter when he offered it for free so while I didn’t pay for it I gladly would’ve, especially after reading it. Additionally, as of this writing (Oct 2024) my primary strategy is a short vol strategy focused on Bitcoin derivatives though I don’t consider myself a crypto trader and spend an equal amount of time on rates, currency, and commodity derivatives.David Hale is an exceptional writer, and this book is amazingly well authored for someone who trades full time for a living (we aren’t known for our keen writing skills). It reads well and quickly. What he has done in the span of less than 200 pages is amazing. I’ve identified 3 books: Glitch/Niche Day trading strategy identification, trading psychology, and a most transparent exposition of personal pitfalls from the first two. Any of which could be a standalone work, yet he’s concisely given them each justice. My least favorite portion of the book is the glitch trading stuff. It is important to understand how these have evolved. Glitches humans can capitalize on in indexes are non-existent, there may be a few in individual names. There are dislocations in some options, but those are rare, challenging, require specific knowledge and a lot of margin capital to access (why I disclosed my current strategy). Additionally, he discusses speed on a keyboard. If a strategy requires speed on a keyboard for profitability, it isn’t viable for long in this world. A lot of what he accomplished was in opaque parts of crypto where there is still asymmetric information, but not for the faint of heart. He is clearly an exceptional trader, but understand he is a very rare trader and will not be easily replicated if at all.The other two books herein are my favorites. The challenging psychology, boom bust cycle, broken personal life. I’ve experienced it all and still in the game though I sometimes question why. The relentless pursuit of independence driven by mistrust sounds romantic, but in reality, is much darker and David does some of the best work I’ve read sharing it.Definitely worth a quick read and a good follow on Twitter.

Really interesting and honest review of the ups and downs of trading. I throughly enjoyed this book and the view of the psychology needed to trade.

A very good book on trading without a single chart or concrete example? Yes it is possible. Most of the books on trading try to introduce the reader to the market instruments, a method, elements of risk management and trading psychology (if they are any good). They are full of charts and examples of winning trades.David Hale really trades for a living. Contrary to most people in the domain who either started in the finance industry or started with a “normal” career and got interested later in trading as a side hustle and a promise to riches, he jumped in right after college. This is what he did his whole career. The book will not teach you a method or transmit the holly grail of trading. But it is full of important wisdoms about the importance of volatility, of finding your own niche, of not trying to predict the markets and the grinding nature of day trading. This roller coaster of a life that trading can bring is a cautionary tale but the author writes in such an enjoyable and humorous way that it is still a life worth reading about.

The book paints a very realistic picture, laying bare the unvarnished truth about the highs and lows of the subject matter. It doesn’t shy away from depicting the gritty reality that is often glossed over in other books. What’s also fascinating is the emphasis on capitalizing on glitches. When you discover a loophole or an advantage, you should seize it and exploit it to its full potential before the opportunity vanishes. Great read!
