Optimize your life using science-backed advice and discover how to get your brain working at peak efficiency.
A FINANCIAL TIMES must-read business book of the month.
A NEXT BIG IDEA CLUB must read book for September.
We all know how to nudge our brains to perform better. A strong cup of coffee helps us get through a dull meeting, and a brisk walk helps us think more clearly. But what if some nudges could optimise how we focus, create and process information even more effectively, to take mental performance to new heights?
Today, most office workers are expected to operate with industrial-era efficiency. Yet the work that matters most in our technology-dominated workplace – generating brilliant ideas, solving complex problems, and learning – can’t be manufactured like outputs on an assembly line. Instead, we need a new, HYPEREFFICIENT way of working: rather than imposing the rhythms of work on our brains, Dr. Mithu Storoni proposes we impose the rhythm of our brains on our work.
Storoni explains that our brains function like a car’s engine, with multiple gears that put our brains in optimal mode for different mental challenges. Drawing on the latest research, she shows us how to seamlessly shift our brains into the best gear for the tasks we need to be doing, so we can perform at our best throughout the day, every day.

Rishan Thimma Sudarsan –
Simply amazing, and takes your thought process on a different level. Crystal clear explanations on each and proper scientific explanations. Was very fascinating to be honest. Must read!
Wendy –
What a liberation! No more “should”, but more mindfulness on one’s own mental gears and flow. Very empowering.
Cheska M. –
A collection of evidence-based techniques to literally be more productive that’s applicable across any aspect of life — not just work. Although, I do keep my copy at work, where I find myself constantly referring back to specific parts that really resonate with my work style to keep myself focus and grounded.
POLYGNOSIS SCHOOL OF ENGLISH –
I spotted two dozen tips to pass to our teenage students. On the other hand, it was a bit wordy in some cases.
Amazon Customer –
I hadn’t looked at the page length before purchasing so after reading through the whole book in under an hour I found myself rather disapointed. The print length is 198 pages but if you ignore the acknowledgements and citations it comes in around 170 pages. At the price of the kindle edition I felt ripped off.Its frustrating because I enjoyed the writing but I wanted it to me much more substantial with more examples of research. If anything the evidence for the self-help advice in the book was rather flimsy and it wasn’t detailed enough to make it a good popular science book.As a self help book it wasn’t really great either because much of the advice you would find elsewhere and it doesn’t have the endless repetition of a self help book that would help cement the ideas in place.Frankly I find some of the 5 star reviews quite baffling and I think I am being generous with three stars.
