“An indispensable manual…Tranquility by Tuesday offers plenty of inspiration for a more serene life, and down-to-earth and evidence-backed advice for actually making it happen.”
–Oliver Burkeman, New York Times bestselling author of Four Thousand Weeks
For anyone who’s sick of letting to-do lists dictate their time, Laura Vanderkam, the bestselling author of What the Most Successful People Do Before Breakfast, shares nine strategies for reclaiming your hours
Do you find yourself hoping that someday, life will be less hectic? One day, you say, you’ll finally have time for the activities that you love – writing that book, completing that triathlon, traveling with friends. But if the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that life is unpredictable. If we’re not careful, dull, unfulfilling tasks can quickly occupy our precious hours, derail our best-laid plans, and make life feel like a slog.
In Tranquility by Tuesday, Laura Vanderkam explains that if you want something to happen, you need to design your life to make it happen. Work crises, childcare emergencies, and home repairs are inevitable, and the mundane tasks of life – cooking, cleaning, laundry – aren’t going anywhere. To make time for what matters, you need a resilient schedule, not a perfect schedule. Based on a time diary study of over 150 people, Vanderkam shares nine strategies for building opportunities for joy, nourishment, and fulfillment into your week, such as:
Three times a week is a habitOne big adventure, one little adventureEffortful before effortless
This is more than a time management book about “how to do it all.” It’s a look at how real people changed their lives using Vanderkam’s nine rules, and how you can do the same. It’s about intentionally living the life that you want to live, and becoming an autonomous steward of life’s possibilities.

9 reviews for Tranquility by Tuesday: 9 Ways to Calm the Chaos and Make Time for What Matters

  1. Candice Neveu

    Practical, realistic, backed by data
I really enjoyed this book. I grabbed it because I both teach and practice time management and the conundrum of strategies that work for busy high achieving women and mature students, whom I serve, has really been addressed in this book. I appreciated the realistic progress not perfection approach, the consideration of what her participants identified as obstacles and how they overcame them. This book offers practical, actionable, tested strategies. I can’t wait to share and practice them!

  2. Amy

Another great book by a thought leader on all things time management, motherhood, and careers.
Laura Vanderkam is one of my most trusted authorities on all things time management for working moms who are striving to find the right balance between work and home to get the ‘best of both worlds’. I love that these are easy, proven strategies to change our perspective on how time passes, and all the anecdotes and examples from real people.

    A must-read for busy people
Laura has written a practical and engaging book that has already had a tremendous impact on my life. Laura shares fresh, realistic and attainable ideas to reclaim more joy, regardless of how busy we are. I will carry these ideas with me throughout all my future Tuesdays, and the rest of my weeks also. This book is a must read for all busy people – or anyone looking to make the most of their time!I am a fan of Laura’s other books as well, especially, “I Know How She Does It” which showed me that we have more time in our day than we may think. I was delighted to see that Laura’s new book took this crucial lesson even further with so much inspiration and actionable advice.

    Don’t waste your money
Couldn’t even finish the book. Nothing groundbreaking at all. All common sense. I had higher hopes for this book and the crappy part is I ordered if for my Kindle and only read barely half and can’t even return it. Waste of money.

I’ve enjoyed Laura’s books for a long time and read her blog regularly. I have been following the Tranquility by Tuesday project as she’s gone along with it and I thought “honestly, what is the book going to have that I haven’t gotten from her blog and online resources?”. Then I considered how helpful her other books were to me, and bought in just in case it did. I’m so glad I did! Lots of helpful insights to consider and I got a much deeper understanding of the 7 rules as well as the WHY behind them. I enjoyed the end of each chapter, with ideas on how to push this work even further. Look, I am the solo parents of 3 kids, sole breadwinner and have my own business–I am a time management and productivity geek and have a lot of systems in place already. These rules either reinforce things I thought were important (like set a bedtime) or have pushed me to try new things (one night for myself). Totally worth the time to read and apply–I’m so excited to level up the fun in my life and become more tranquil 🙂

When we get frustrated with life, we often think that we need to make big changes, but this wonderful, inspiring book shows you that success is possible, even in the midst of a complex and occasionally chaotic life.It demonstrates that you do not need to wait for some idealised, less hectic time in the future to become the person you want to be. Laura shows you that with a different perspective, and a focus on doing what you can, you can be that person now.Nine simple, easy to implement approaches (plus some bonus options), that have been tested by busy people. They are warmly and compellingly explained and are all things you can easily adopt without upending your current life. And the best bit is that they’re designed to boost how satisfied and happy you are with your day to day life.Definitely worth reading. Definitely worth trying the ideas for yourself. Instead of searching for the perfect life changing book, read this life enhancing book instead and find ways to enjoy your life right now.

Very practical and much more relatable than 168 hours. I particularly liked the little and big adventure ideas as someone with three very young children, it’s going to help me have a sense of life being much more intentionally designed for everyone, not just the kids!

I have been an avid listener to Laura’s podcast for some time and have read all her other books – I wondered if this would just be a repeat of material I’d come across before. Not so ..this was an inspirational refresher of some ideas and an introduction of new ones. Although I already follow a lot of the 9 ways, the new presentation, fleshing out of topics and reflection /review points has encouraged me to revisit the practices with renewed energy and motivation.
