“The first personal finance book for the 2020s: expensive housing, BNPL, side hustles, negotiating a raise, and much more. Erica Alini is one of Canada’s top personal finance pros, and this book shows it.” —ROB CARRICK
Wrestle debt to the ground. Figure out whether you should rent or buy. And determine if a side hustle is really worth the hassle.
Get a job, buy a house, spend less than you make, and retire at sixty-five. That’s advice for a world that has largely disappeared. Even good jobs today often have no guarantee of stability. Home prices have reached the stratosphere. Meanwhile, student debt drags you down just as you’re trying to take off in life.
To survive and thrive in today’s reality, you need a whole new personal finance tool kit.
Personal finance reporter Erica Alini blends the big picture with practical advice to give you a deeper understanding of the economic forces that are shaping your financial struggles and how to overcome them.
Packed with concrete tips, Money Like You Mean It covers all the bases: from debt to investing and retirement, plus renting versus buying, and even how to tell whether a side gig is really worth the effort. It’s the essential road map you need to make it in the current economy.

Practical advice for Gen Z/millennials: not your parents’ personal finance book
I run a company with mostly Gen Z and millennial employees – we purchased copies of this book for our team, and I read it as well. I found the book to be extremely relevant to today’s consumer – it includes topics like buy now pay later tools; how to manage digital subscriptions; new home-buyer incentives in Canada; and how to save for retirement when we don’t have the same formula for success as our parents (no 30-year steady job, no pensions, not always a goal of retiring at 65). It’s a practical handbook for anyone who’s looking to build savings, invest, understand credit scores, figure out how to afford a home, and navigate negotiating for more money at your job.

I bought 3 copies for family – that should say it all!
    Very relevant.

  3. Clifton Corbin – author of Your Kids, Their Money

A Millennial and Gen Z Money Survival Guide
I love how Alini breaks down each concept and explains what we can do and how we got here. She has a knack for taking the big concepts like interest rates, inflated housing or debt and showing how they impact us directly in our daily lives. She highlights the challenges millennials and Gen Z adults face in our current world. She explains why the adages that may have worked for previous generations of study hard, get a good job and buy a house don’t mean the same thing when you may also be dealing with the “Triple Money Challenge Of Parenting” mortgage, student loans, child care, all why taking a dip in pay during pat/mat leave.Alini speaks directly to Millennials and Gen Zs who likely won’t have pensions and need to look at earning, saving and investing differently to make their money work for them even harder. But what I think I enjoyed the most is that Money Like You Mean It addresses the shame, guilt and self-blame that is far too often associated with personal finance. If you are looking for a book on personal finance that doesn’t talk down to you or assume you will be working in the same job for the next 30 years with a pension in retirement, this is the book for you.

A book for the high school curriculum and you!
No matter how wise you are with money, I can promise you that you’ll learn something by reading this book. It’s not as dry as many other financial books tend to be which makes it easy to read, digest and implement immediately!Alini has a way of giving advice mixed with facts without boring me and for that I give her major props. While some of it was review for me, I still learned a lot and have much to think about after reading her tips and going down the path of financial experts she refers to.I do recommend this book be adopted into the high school curriculum though also know it will be a worthwhile book at any age. If you like money, you should love this book! Thanks for reading,Sarah Butland

Here’s a household title you’ll keep coming back to for practical financial advice!
Even though I read the book in one go – it’s very well written, hyper practical, and fun (never thought I’d say it about a book on finances) – I already came back to it for insights on the TFSA and renting. The author does a terrific job breaking down confusing concepts like cryptocurrencies and retirement funds and providing easy to use tools like The Money Bucket System. As a new immigrant to Canada, it’s challenging to navigate all the nuances of the financial system, but this book is my go-to guide on questions from negotiating your salary, organizing your savings, or paying for babies.

Written for a millennial with money or rich parents
This book is full of formulas and opinions that seem dated already. I quit reading it halfway through.

  7. Yilmaz

Full of practical insights and recommendations, presented in a fun & engaging way
I really enjoyed reading “Money Like You Mean It” – it touches upon all the key financial challenges/decisions that millennials like myself are facing and offers evidence-based ways to handle our personal finances better. Do I continue renting or try to purchase a home in a heated housing market? How should I plan for retirement or having kids? What are the best ways to leverage TFSA vs. RRSP vs. other forms of investment? The book provides great insights on questions like these and many more. I appreciated the section/chapter-end takeaways as well. Highly recommended!

    Lots of great ideas!
This book has a lot of good ideas for saving and dealing with debt that I hadn’t thought of before. I feel more in control of my financial situation now. The writing is great and approachable and the author explains a lot of the economic context of why things seem so different now than they were for previous generations. Definitely worth it!
