Practicing mindfulness helps us meet life’s challenges with gentleness and clarity. By fully engaging in the present moment as best we can, we nurture our capacity to approach difficulties with less judgment and water the seeds of wisdom and openheartedness in ourselves. This book offers a concise and thorough immersion in the eight-week Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. It features straightforward instruction in the main exercises of MBSR — sitting meditation, walking meditation, eating meditation, yoga, body scan, and informal, everyday practices. MBSR has been shown to help alleviate symptoms associated with chronic illness, anxiety, pain, burnout, cancer, and other stress-related conditions.
The authors, two leading MBSR teacher trainers, provide step-by-step instructions as well as illustrative real-life examples. Readers embarking on a course in MBSR will find clear guidance, trainers will gain a valuable tool for their teaching, and anyone experiencing or receiving treatment for challenges of mind, body, or spirit will find practical, inspirational help.

As an MBSR graduate from Center For Mindfulness, UMass, I heartily recommend this book to current, future and graduate MBSR participants. Linda and Petra write passionately and warmly about the eight-week MBSR course, describing all the practices in great detail, making it easy for anyone interested to follow along very easily. The script of each exercise is given in a box, separate from the text, and makes it easy to locate. The book also has a wonderful list of books under recommended reading specifically for MBSR and foundations of mindfulness. The section on resources is exhaustive, and teacher associations are listed by country.Linda is also a founder of Institute for Mindfulness-Based Approaches, which offers teacher training programs all over Europe. Petra is the founder of Achtsamkeitinstitut in Ruhr, which focuses on MBSR and MBCT. It’s so fortunate to have these two teachers distill their knowledge into this brief book.Check it out, I’m sure you’ll enjoy this as I have. Thanks Linda and Petra!

Effective book giving advice on stress reduction through mindfulness practices. I have heard much about mindfulness-based stress reduction techniques of late and this book did not disappoint. Lots of helpful advice coupled with exercises. I am pleased with my purchase and would buy again.

We all have resources within ourselves to enchance the lives we live. In participating in a 8 week MBSR program developed by Jon Kabbat-Zinn, you will have the opportunity to discover your own gifts, to befriend who you already are and to strengthen the skills needed to show up to life, with its ups and downs. This book is a guidance, compass and a support both for participants, trainers and for anyone else who wants to explore mindfulness. The book is written in a clear, skillful and comprehensive way by two longtime experienced teachers and teacher trainers. Part two in the book gives a map over the 8 week MBSR curriculum, session by session, rich with examples from both participants and the authors as teachers. Most importantly of all, it is written with an undertone of care and compassion, which I believe is the main message of mindfulness. I highly recommend this new book and it will be a great support in your exploration of mindfulness!

As a researcher and teacher in the area of mindfulness-based wellness, I found this book to be refreshingly well-organized, clear, concise, and comprehensive. With detailed descriptions of the necessary practices, along with narratives from student experiences, the authors do an excellent job of capturing the essence of this transformative program using an inspiring yet accessible approach. I highly recommend this book for anyone looking to further their practice and understanding of MBSR, whether you are a beginner or experienced practitioner, or are simply interested in MBSR for informational or scholastic purposes.

Reading this book is, I suspect, very much like being in an MBSR class with Linda. Her warmth, caring, wisdom, and depth are clear. She has long experience, and I found her teachings to be fresh and refreshing. As an MBSR teacher myself, I recommend this book to anyone curious about mindfulness or meditation, to anyone taking or considering an MBSR class, and definitely to other MBSR or mindfulness teachers.
